Why We Chose a Birth Center Over a Hospital
**I know that every pregnancy, birth and baby are different and this post is not to imply that I think everyone must do anything the same way as we've decided to do it or that "my way" is the right way. That being sad, I'd love to share why we have chosen a birth center over a hospital:
I strongly believe that the journey is just as important as the destination. I think this applies to the birth of a child in so many ways. So far, my pregnancy has been such an amazing journey and I'm not even halfway through it! I think this time is so important for bonding and preparing for one of the biggest milestones in a person's life.
This same belief is why we have chosen to have a natural birth at a birthing center. While many women have opted for - and successfully had - natural, non-medicated births at a hospital, for Vaughan and I, the best option was a birth center. We love the idea of being surrounded by like-minded women (midwives) and having the space and freedom to labor and deliver how I choose. Having never been through labor, it's hard to have a solid opinion on the subject, but from what I've read, heard and discussed with close friends and family members, I think it can be a beautiful, empowering experience. And a birth center can enhance that experience for many people.
The idea behind a birth center is to make you feel completely at home and hopefully make you feel safe and comfortable enough to make labor a peaceful experience. They offer birthing tubs, beds and chairs so you can opt to labor and deliver the way that feels best to each individual mother and father.
Obviously the goal of labor and delivery is to welcome a healthy child into the world, but why does labor have to be something that women dread? It makes me sad to hear women talk about how awful labor was or how they fear having to go through it again. I am hoping that by opting to deliver at Baby + Co in Cary, both Vaughan and I will have a better chance of enjoying the experience and feeling more "in control" than we might at a hospital.
I'll update you all once I've actually delivered my little one, but as of now, I feel ready and (dare I say) excited to experience something so empowering and wonderful with THE BEST end result possible! These are my thoughts thus far! Let me know if you have questions or comments about birth centers vs. hospitals: I'm no expert but I'll try to help in any way :)
